Environmental Policy

At Downie Timber and Selkirk Cedar, we have a strong corporate commitment to the environment in which we live and work.

In both our Woodlands and on-site Manufacturing departments, we support responsible stewardship, combined with on-going improvements and development of our manufacturing facilities to provide high quality, innovative products for our customers.

At Downie Timber and Selkirk Cedar, we use electric motors and drives to ensure energy efficiency. All our hydraulic tanks are equipped with low level switching, in order to prevent tanks draining in the event of a broken line. The tanks are also equipped with high-level warning systems to prevent overfilling. We are committed to recycling of all waste and oil filters and ensure strategic placement of anti-spill kits throughout our plant. We use up-to-date fuel dispensing to prevent spillage while fueling equipment, and have installed spill containment on all hydraulic tanks to prevent any releases into the environment. Downie Timber and Selkirk Cedar conform to all provincial regulations regarding spill prevention and reporting.

In order to fully optimize use of our natural resources we use thin kerf saws and computer / PLC scanning in order to get the highest recovery possible out of every log we process.

Downie Timber and Selkirk Cedar are currently working on a project to replace the Olivine burner with a waste-hogging system. This extensive and innovative energy conservation program will allow us to partner with the City of Revelstoke by providing fuel for the City-owned district heating project. In turn, Downie Timber and Selkirk Cedar will buy low-pressure steam to be used in drying our lumber, reducing the use of propane gas in the drying process.

In keeping with our commitment to reduce, reuse and recycle, Downie Timber and Selkirk Cedar use yard lighting that shuts off during daylight hours in order to reduce energy usage.

We do not use any chemicals or pesticides that are harmful to the environment in our wood preservation process.

Downie Timber and Selkirk Cedar are committed to protecting the environment in all aspects of the operation in order to provide positive long-term economic benefits for the people of the Revelstoke area.
